Item Overview

Description

CHAPMAN, Cyrus Durand (1856-1918). Self Made Pictures for Children or Cut-Out Journeys to Famous Places. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1916.

Oblong 4to. 10 color views, each with several overlays that have been cut and attached to create a three-dimensional image (a few overlays detached, a few short tears). Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards (worn, reinforced at hinges).

A charming series of views of well-known historical sites originally intended as an interactive learning exercise for young children. "… When a child studies and cuts out each separate part of one of these views and constructs the finished picture, he knows all about that place. With the story that goes with it, his knowledge is complete" (Introduction). The views include Mount Vernon, Niagara Falls, Valley Forge, and Ann Hathaway's Cottage.
