Cornice d'epoca posteriore in legno intagliato e dorato
Firmato C.T. nell'angolo a destra. Autentica sul retro Dipinto di Cesare Tallone intorno 1890 a firma di Roberto Montanari (?).
Provenienza: Collezione privata, Verona.

Precocemente attratto dalle arti figurative, Cesare Tallone entrò, dodicenne, nella bottega di Pietro Sassi, pittore di Alessandria; il suo talento fu presto riconosciuto e dalla Municipalità di Alessandria venne aiutato a seguire dei corsi regolari: grazie all'aiuto di un mecenate, poté iscriversi all'Accademia di Brera nel novembre 1872. Allievo di Giuseppe Bertini, ebbe come compagni di studio Previati, Spartaco Vela, Gola, Segantini. Nel 1873 entra a far parte della "Famiglia artistica", un sodalizio animato da Vespasiano Bignami, in cui si ritrovavano esponenti della scapigliatura e delle altre correnti d'arte del tempo come Cremona, Ranzoni, Giuseppe Grandi, Giovanni Segantini, Eugenio Gignous, Emilio Longoni, Angelo Morbelli, Gaetano Previati, e molti altri.
Nel 1880 fu a Roma dove conobbe Gemito, Mancini e Michetti e dove lavorò intensamente. Fu all'Esposizione di Roma del 1883 con successo e l'anno successivo all'esposizione di Torino. Nel 1884 vince il concorso per la cattedra di Pittura all'Accademia Carrara di Bergamo, che detenne fino al 1898, quando passò a Milano, all'Accademia di Brera, dove insegnò dal 1899 fino alla morte.
L'ambito nel quale Cesare Tallone espresse il meglio di sé fu il ritratto. I suoi ritratti erano assai richiesti, anche dalla famiglia reale: eseguì infatti vari ritratti del re Umberto e della regina Margherita.
