Presented by either John Bouverie or his nephew Christopher Hervey to the Rt. Hon. Sir John Rushout, 4th Bt. (died 1775), or alternatively by John Bouverie's sister Elisabeth Bouverie to Sir John Rushout, 5th Bt., later 1st Lord Northwick (died 1800), and by descent at Northwick Park to
Capt. E.G. Spencer-Churchill; Sotheby's, 1 November 1920, lot 7 (as Guercino, to Meatyard).
Purchased from Meatyard, 4 November 1920 (£2.5s.).

Notes

The attribution to Cesare Gennari, pupil and nephew of Guercino, was confirmed by Nicholas Turner, who also kindly elucidated the provenance.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
