Item Overview

Description

Cesare Dandini (c.1595-1658)
Saint Agnes. Provenance: auction Sotheby's, London, 7 April 1991, lot 123. Literature: Sandro Bellesi, Cesare Dandini, Turijn 1996, p. 188/189 (nr. 9, as ‘attributed to’). The saint is depicted with a lamb, referring to her name, and a palm leaf, symbol of her martyrdom. In style and colour the canvas is characteristic of the work of Dandini. There currently are three other works attributed to the artist which depict the same saint, in the Palazzo Vescovile di Siena and in private collections in Paris and Florence (see Bellesi, cat. nos. 36, 75, 76). NB Dr Sandro Bellesi has confirmed the authenticity of this work after seeing a colour image (email correspondence 11 October 2018).
