Item Overview

Description

Cerný Jan (Rychnov 1907 - 1978) and Ryba Jirí (Stará Paka 1938)
Over a Victim, smoky glass, fused sculpture, signed and dated prof. J. Cerný J. Ryba 76, 16 x 41 x 12 cm (Zí)
This is a unique sculpture of which only one was made. At the same time, it is the largest fused sculpture of these authors. Jan Cerný attended the sculpting studio (Professor Maratka) and the glassmaking studio (Professor Štipl) at the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design. From 1947, he taught at the Glassmaking Professional Secondary School in Eisenbrod. Jan Cerný worked with glass fusing technology from the 1940s onward, and linked his design work with this technique. In the 1960s, he became the designer of the Jablonec Maják cooperative, where he did work based on his own design. He started to cooperate with his students Jirí Ryba and Vratislav Jindra. Their joint work, characterised by a sculpting approach with a typical expressive style, is better known abroad than in the Czech Republic and is considered pioneering. In the 1990s, a whole generation of glassmakers built on their work. Jan Cerný and Jirí Ryba made each of their designs in one copy or had them made in series. The sculptures on offer are unique and come from the authors' studio.
