Item Overview

Description

Tabula Moderna Poloniae, Ungariae, Bohemiae, Germaniae, Russiae, Lithvae. Rome: Antonio Salamanca, 1548. Engraved map of central Europe, 399 x 529mm, on a Royal sheet, trimmed with original extended paper margins (Some discolouration to central fold and lower corners.)

A rare and important map, published by Salamanca is derived from Nicolaus of Cusa's iconic map of central Europe, c.1450s, and more directly from Marcus Beneventano and Bernhard Wopowski's map of the region contained in their Rome Ptolemy of 1507. It covers the heart of the continent; Poland, Hungary, Bohemia and Germany occupy the centre of the image, which is detailed throughout with the finely engraved features of towns, forests and mountains and the entire watersheds of the rivers Rhine, Danube and Elbe. The image is bound on the north by the Baltic and North Seas, and to the south by the Alps and the Gulf of Venice. Karrow no.23/1.8, Tooley:1939 no.248, Woodward:1996 watermark 240.
