Item Overview

Description

This rare and resplendent folio lithograph is from Frederick Catherwood Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan 1844. The work was published in New York by Barlett (Bartlett) & Welford in 1844. The publication was limited to 300 copies.

The original illustrations for this work were completed by Catherwood. The tinted lithographs were completed by Andrew Picken, William Parrott, Henry Warren, John C. Bourne, George Belton Moore and Thomas Shotter Boys. Exceptional hand-coloring has been added modernly as the author had intended the work to be viewed. Most of Catherwood's original paintings were destroyed in a fire when on exhibit.

John Lloyd Stephens was inspired by accounts of ancient Central America civilizations and had Frederick Catherwood accompany him on two journeys. They explored the archaeological sites of Honduras, Guatemala, Chiapas, and Yucatan from 1839 to 1841. “In the whole range of literature on the Maya there has never appeared a more magnificent work than Views of Ancient Monuments.” (V. W. von Hagen)

"Las Monjas (the nunnery) at Uxmal was named by the Spanish, who were reminded by the layout and care to detail of Spanish cloisters. It may have been a Mayan place of worship, possibly a cemetery. It is comprised of a quadrangle, perfectly proportioned, and embellished with sculpted friezes rich in Mayan religious imagery. Uxmal, an ancient Mayan city, in present-day Yucatan, Mexico is in the town of Santa Elena." (Heald)
