Notes

Claude Grangé was born in Vienne in 1883. He studied at the Lyons School of Fine Arts and under Jean Antoine Injalbert (1845-1933) in Paris. He was a member of the jury and Vice President of the Council of the Artistes Français, winning a gold medal in 1926 and the medal of honour in 1935. He became an officer of the Legion of Honour in 1918. He produced a number of war memorials and monuments after the first world war, notably those at Vienne, Verdun and Lyons, and sculpted the bas-reliefs on the gates of the Exposition Internationale in 1937. He became a member of the French Academy in 1950.

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was considered to be the father of French Romanticism in music. His music was always extremely original and grand in scale. As a result of his extreme ideas, he was often viewed as a crazy lunatic by many of his contemporaries. Fortunately, many of his great works survived. These days, some of his most famous works, including Symphonie Fantastique, The Damnation of Faust, and The Requiem, are periodically performed in concert halls.
