Tuskegee Institute, Alabama: 1935 George Washington Carver, African-American botanist, writes Grady Porter at the Tom Huston Peanut Co. in Columbus, Georgia, inquires about various matters, and discusses the peanut business, "...just how are we going to pull out of it is a very serious problem. Just think of it, $110.00 per ton for peanuts, phenomenal. My strength is holding up I guess fairly well for a person of my age. The latch string always hangs on the outside for you here."
