MIH, 1984, reproduit p. 110 du catalogue, fig. 35. Le catalogue de l'exposition consacré à Ferdinand Berthoud en 1984, Ferdinand Berthoud 1727-1807, Horloger Mécanicien du Roi et de la Marine, mentionne seulement trois exemplaires de cartel avec un mouvement de Berthoud : celui que nous présentons, un autre dans l'ancienne collection René Fribourg (Sotheby's, Londres, 28 Juin 1963, lot 172) et un troisième d'une localisation inconnue. Témoignage du grand art de la rocaille sous le règne de Louis XV, ce beau cartel d'applique en bronze ciselé et doré doit être attribué au grand bronzier Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain.

Notes

Le cadran circulaire en émail est surmonté d'un putto alangui appuyé sur une lyre, identifiable comme Apollon enfant. Il est enveloppé dans une superbe feuille d'acanthe ajourée. Les feuillages asymétriques se poursuivent tout autour du cadran, se développant en volutes et en agrafes. L'iconographie et la virtuosité de la ciselure des bronzes est à rapprocher de la production du grand bronzier Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain, confère un cartel similaire appartenant à l'ancienne collection Eugène Kraemer . Saint-Germain travailla avec l'horloger Ferdinand Berthoud, dont le talent lui valut les plus grands honneurs et les faveurs du Roi. Parmi ses clients comptaient le Duc de Praslin, le Marquis de Castries, le Duc d'Aumont ou encore l'Ambassadeur d'Espagne. Il fut l'auteur de très grandes avancées techniques en matière d'horlogerie qu'il révéla au public tant par ses écrits que par des réalisations. Il s'associa ainsi avec de grands ébénistes et bronziers comme Charles Cressent, Etienne Levasseur ou Balthazar Lieutaud. Ses écrits et sa production lui permirent de connaître le succès de l'Ancien Régime à l'Empire, traversant sans encombre la période révolutionnaire.

The sale will be conducted in Euros (e).
Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to e 500 000:
25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to e 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted. Exhibitions prior to the sale at Marc-Arthur Kohn or on the sale point permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale, and therefore no claims will be accepted after the fall of the hammer. Pictures may differ from actual product.

BIDS
Biddings will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue or as announced by the auctioneer, and will be in increments determined by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser. Should the auctioneer recognize two simultaneous bids on
an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the sale room may participate in this second opportunity to bid.

ABSENTEE BIDS AND TELEPHONE BIDS
If you wish to make a bid in writing or a telephone bid, we have to receive no later than two days before the sale your instructions accompanied by your bank references. In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence. Telephone bids are a free service designed for
