Item Overview

Description

Carlos Scliar was an important Brazilian painter, designer and illustrator, born of Jewish immigrant parents in Rio Grande de Sul. After tutoring by Gustav Epstein and attending the School of Fine Art in Porto Alegre, Seliar joined the Brazilian Expeditionary Force fighting in Europe in the second world war. After the war he based himself in France, travelling to Italy, Portugal, Poland and elsewhere to enhance his artistic knowledge. He became a friend of the great Portuguese artist Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and his style matured, taking inspiration from both Cubism and Morandi. But in 1950 he returned to Brazil becoming a major cultural figure, innovative in his art, illustrating works by poets such as Jorge Amado and Vinicius de Moraes, and being involved in political activism and various art publishing adventures. Scliar exhibited extensively in Brazil and internationally; his work was included in a travelling exhibition of modern Brazilian art that showed at the Royal Academy and Royal College of Art in 1965. The Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro held a major retrospective of Scliar’s work in 1970, which was accompanied by a pamphlet on Scliar by Roberto Pontual, and another in 1991. Pontual also worked with Seliar on a book on the painter published in 1983. His work is held in the Rio Grande Sul Museum of Art, with murals adorning the Manchete Museum in Rio de Janeiro as well as other Brazilian public buildings. After Scliar’s death a Cultural Institute was set up in his name and a permanent museum to him opened in Rio in 2006.
