Notes

We are very grateful to Professor Elizabeth Kieven for dating this design to the 1760s or early 1770s. She also noted that the highly elaborate design may suggest that it was an idea for a temporary decoration. Very little is known of St. Ferma, although in the 19th century her relics were for a time housed in what is now the sanctuary of Saint Philomena, in Mugnano del Cardinale, near Naples.
