Notes

Carlo Manieri, who has been variously recorded also as Maniero or Maniere, was originally from Taranto. He was admitted to the Congregazione dei Virtuosi at the Pantheon, Rome, in 1662, and remained there until 1675, living in the parish of San Lorenzo in Lucina until at least 1680. His name appears three times in the noble Roman collection inventories: six paintings are registered in the 1714 Colonna inventory, two in the 1725 Pamphilj inventory and two in the 1756 Valenti Gonzaga one, although none of these paintings appears to have survived in the collections. The most comprehensive idea of the artist's output can be gleaned from the merchant, Pellegrino Peri's inventory of possessions compiled after his death in 1699. This includes two of his masterpieces that were destined to furnish the Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, as identified by Eduard A. Safarik in 1991. For a more detailed discussion of Manieri's oeuvre, see: G. Bocchi and U. Bocchi, Pittori di Natura Morta a Roma, Artisti Italiani 1630-1750 (Viadana, 2005), pp. 525-571.
