Voet's principal patron, by whom he was engaged from circa 1689 and whom he accompanied to England on numerous occasions, was Hans Willem Bentinck, later Earl of Portland. This appears to be a mature work, probably painted in Dordrecht, where he moved some time after 1702.
We are grateful to Fred Meijer, of the RKD, for confirming the attribution, on the basis of photographs.
