Lot 2128A: Candy JERNIGAN (American, 1952 - 1991)

POP TOPS OF THE MODERN WORLD, a bound portfolio of six hand-coloured and stamped xeroxes. Each print is a drawing of a discarded pop top found in a different city. This portfolio is number 3 of an edition of 24. Of all the artworks made in the East Village during the 1980s, few reflect that environment with as much unsentimental wit as Candy Jernigan’s drawings and assemblages. As advocate of the overlooked, Jernigan was committed to collecting evidence of life as she really lived it: she cataloged crack vials she found on the street and took Polaroids of bloodstains on the pavement. She would draw Cheeze Doodles and flattened pots, or cans of Goya beans, often adding small maps to show where in the city these items had been found. Her work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, the Bronx Museum and the Boston Children's Museum, as well as several galleries in New York City. Her theater work included sets for John Moran's multi-media opera "The Manson Family”. She was also the wife of composer Phillip Glass.
