Canan Tolon uses materials such as soot and rust, and other natural materials in her canvases, expressing the degredation and deterioration in culture. There is a tension in her works between the intentional and the natural, bringing the canvas into contact materials such as rust over a long period of time, whilst at the same time imposing some kind of compositional structure upon it.
