Notes

Elmer Simms Campbell (1906-1971) was the first African-American cartoonist to break the color line. His cartoons of voluptuous women adorned the pages of Esquire magazine from 1933 until his death. Campbell not only created captioned cartoons for the magazine, but advertisements and vignettes as well. Some issues contain as many as a dozen examples of his work. This cartoon is a rare example of a black woman and man appearing in one of his cartoons.
