HUANG JISHUI (1509-1574) CALLIGRAPHY IN RUNNING SCRIPT Handscroll, ink on silk Inscribed and signed by the artist Dated autumn, jiaxu year of the Wanli era (1574) Colophon by Qu Shisi (1590-1650), with two seals Nine collectors' seals, including four of Zhao Zongjian (1824-1900) and two of Hong Liangji (1746-1809) 7 3/8 x 100 in. (19 x 254 cm.)

Notes

Huang Jishui was born in Wuxian county, Suzhou . A precocious child, he worked for Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) at an early age. Later, he studied calligraphy under Zhu Yunming (1460-1526) and Wang Chong (1494-1533), following the style of Tang Dynasty calligrapher Yu Shinan (558-638).
