Lot 190: Ca. 1802 Stipple Engraving of Thomas Jefferson

North America, United States, Philadelphia, ca. 1802 CE. A stipple engraving of Thomas Jefferson in an oval format on heavy paper, reading "R. Peale Pinx / C. Tiebout Sculpt / Published by A. Day, No. 38 Chestnut St. Philadelphia" below the image. The notable Cornelius Tiebout (1773/77 - 1832) engraved this 3/4 view of Jefferson based upon a Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) portrait entitled, "Thomas Jefferson President of the United States" (1800) which was also published by A. Day of Philadelphia. A. Day was active at 38 Chestnut Street in 1802 and by 1806 had relocated to 221 S. 2nd Street. Hence, Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was serving as the third President of the United States (1801-1809) when this engraving was created and published. Cornelious Tiebout was a highly respected copper engraver. His works have been collected by some of our most prestigious art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This engraving was modeled upon a celebrated portrait of President Jefferson by Rembrandt Peale, an accomplished American artist who specialized in portraits greatly influenced by French Neoclassicism as well as noted American portraitists John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart. Size: plate mark measures 8.75" W x 11.5" H (22.2 cm x 29.2 cm); paper as a whole measures 11.875" W x 20" H (30.2 x 50.8 cm)

One of six surviving children of the Philadelphian artist and founder of the American Museum of Philadelphia Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale was named for the 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Along with his siblings Raphaelle Peale, Rubens Peale, and Titian Peale (all named after legendary artists), Rembrandt was taught to paint by his father. Interestingly, Rembrandt Peale and his father Charles both painted the first president of the United States George Washington; Charles painted him when he was young prior to his presidency, and Rembrandt painted him as an aging former president.
