Lot 248: C. Schlein Tropical Landscape Vintage Hollywood

Charles Schlein (Russian/American, 1899-1988); figures on path in tropical forest, (probably a vintage motion picture set); oil on board; 18" x 14"; signed lower left and verso with Hollywood address. *Born in Satanov, Russia, Schlein immigrated to New York City in 1909. He studied there at the NAD under Kroll, Hawthorne, and other artists of the Ashcan School. Having had two one-man shows in NYC, in 1928 he left for Paris where he painted and exhibited for two years. Returning to NYC during the Depression, he worked for the WPA. After moving to Los Angeles in 1938, he painted publicity portraits for motion picture studios. He remained in LA until his death. *(from the archives of Askart)
