La jeune femme représentée montre un visage doux et serein. Ses épaules sont
recouvertes d’un drapé souple. Sa longue chevelure s’agrémente d’une rose, ajoutant à la délicatesse du modèle.
Madame de Fondville (1721-1787) épousa le Conseiller du Roi, Receveur particulier des gabelles et des huiles. Ils vivaient dans un prestigieux hôtel du Mans et y côtoyaient les grands personnages du Royaume tels le Maréchal de Duras, le Comte de Bissey et le Marquis Voyer d’Argenson.
Notre oeuvre peut être attribuée à Jean-Baptiste Defernex, sculpteur français du XVIIIe siècle, qui excella dans la représentation de jeunes femmes en buste. On connaît de lui une représentation de Madame de Fondville en terre cuite conservée au Musée du Mans. En tant que membre de l’Académie de Saint Luc, il est fort probable qu’il ait rencontré Madame de Fondville par l’intermédiaire de Voyer d’Argenson. Il débuta sa carrière comme modeleur à la Manufacture de Sèvres puis se mit au service du Duc d’Orléans. Bien qu’il ne reçut jamais de commande officielle, il participa à plusieurs salons et fut reconnu par la critique. En 1757, il réalise le buste de Madame Favart en terre cuite conservé au Musée du Louvre, témoignage caractéristique de son travail .

Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to € 500 000: 25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to € 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted.
