Notes

Charles V, duc de Lorraine (1643-1690), dans l’impossibilité de prendre possession de son duché, occupé par les troupes de Louis XIV, vécut à la Cour de Vienne. Beau-frère et ami de l’Empereur Léopold, il se distingua à la tête des armées impériales dans les combats de défense contre les Turcs, qu’il vainquit aux portes de Vienne, et dans les batailles de Buda et de Mohács. La paix de Ryswick rendit le Duché de Lorraine à son fils Léopold, qui y régna de 1698 à 1729, grand prince constructeur et ami des arts. Ce n’est pas lui, mais son fils et successeur, François, futur époux de Marie-Thérèse de Habsbourg et Empereur, qui commanda en 1731 à Rémy François Chassel les bustes rétrospectifs de son grand-père Charles V et de son père. Notre buste n’est donc pas un portrait ad vivum. Rémy François Chassel est un des meilleurs sculpteurs à la Cour de Léopold. Il appartenait à une famille de sculpteurs lorrains, originaire de Rambervillers, dans les Vosges, dont il est difficile de dresser la généalogie. D’après Dom Calmet, dans son Histoire de Lorraine, il aurait enrichi sa formation à Paris dans l’atelier de Louis Lecomte avant d’être nommé directeur de l’Académie ducale de Peinture et de Sculpture de Nancy. Il reçut des commandes pour l’Opéra et l’Hôtel de ville de Nancy, pour des églises (notamment Saint-Sébastien de Nancy), pour le château ducal de Lunéville et ses jardins et enfin de nombreux monuments funéraires. Son buste montre l’influence française dans le duché voisin de Lorraine. Le traitement de la grande perruque louisquatorzienne et du modelé sensible du visage rappelle l’art de Coysevox. Il réussit à donner à son personnage un air très vivant d’une certaine morgue, décelable dans l’expression des yeux et la Effet miroir pour publication moue de la bouche. Le buste est coupé sans les épaules. Sur les rubans qui décorent le vêtement, on voit sur le côté une croix potencée et sur le devant les alérions des armoiries de Lorraine de part et d’autre de la croix de Lorraine à deux branches. L’ouvrage témoigne de la qualité des artistes que le duc Léopold avait su rassembler pour affirmer, comme Louis XIV, la grandeur de son règne, dans son État encore indépendant, limitrophe du royaume de France, mais qui s’avouait largement tributaire de l’art de Versailles et de Paris. Dans ses Mémoires pour servir à l’histoire des hommes illustres de Lorraine, François ___________Antoine Chevrier, en 1754, vantait le « ciseau mâle et hardi » de Chassel et ajoutait qu’il excellait dans les bustes.
