Description

Children around giant snowman, watercolor on board, 460 x 320 mm, signed "BUK" lower center. Matted and framed. Published : Christmas magazine Fashions of the Hour (Chicago: Marshall Fields & Co., 1920s), cover art. Born in Koseg, Austria-Hungary, Buk Ulreich emigrated with his family and attended the Kansas City Art School and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After spending eight months in Europe, he returned to New York City in 1915 and worked for a year before joining the army. On his return to in 1923, he contributed to the Delineator, Vogue and other magazines. He also joined the WPA. He is perhaps best remembered today for his "Wild West" murals in the Art Deco manner for Radio City Music Hall, the 1933 Chicago World's Fair and post offices around the country. His later work concentrated on Native American themes.
