Item Overview

Description

* Bruno Capacci (Italian 1906-1993), a surrealist five-fold screen, the five panels with a 'metaphysical' landscape centred with a house and Commedia dell'Arte figures dancing around a podium with differently coloured and decorated balls in the foreground, signed 'Capacci '51' to the second panel, overall 251cm wide 170.5cm high two outer panels (50cm wide x 170cm high) three inner panels (49.5 x 160cm high) Born in Venice in 1906, Capacci moved to Paris where he became acquainted with the Italians of Montparnasse such as Chirico, Severini, Magni, Magnelli, Leonor Fini. In 1939 he met and married Belgian artist, Suzanne Van Damme (1901-1986). They made friends with Breton, Cocteau, Eluard, Fellini, Louise de Vimorin, Marcel Lecomte, Paul Colinet and many others. His first 'metaphysical' paintings were inspired by his love of his native country and its Commedia dell'Arte. In 1947, André Breton and Marcel Duchamp invited Capacci to join the International Surrealist Exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris. In this period, his works became more and more poetic. Capacci was not only a painter and surrealist poet of great talent, but also a famous ceramicist. * Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
