Brinckmann was a court painter, counsellor of the court chamber, and supervisor of the famous picture gallery at the court of the Electoral Palatinate in Mannheim. Goethe mentions him in his work "From my Life: Poetry and Truth" when he writes about Seekat: "He was a student of Brinckmann's whose command of the brush in easel paintings mustn't be criticised."
