Description

Braby (Dorothea, 1909-1987). An archive of preparatory work for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, pub. Golden Cockerel Press, 1952, comprising Braby's sketchbook, containing numerous pencil drawings and sketches, incl. a number for Sir Gawain, one with gouache colouring, a set of five mounted colour wood engravings for Sir Gawain, each signed and dated in pencil, contained in coloured paper wrappers with the story in ms. in Braby's hand "for Don with love Xmas '51", and a pull of the printed title-page, plus approx. fifty further colour wood engravings, mostly printer's proofs for colour separations, a few signed, and a number with pencil marginalia in Braby's hand, plus five letters, incl. two from poet Professor Gwyn Jones regarding the story of Sir Gawain, one from Charles Ede on Folio Society headed paper thanking Dorothea for the engravings, and two from Christopher Sandford at the Golden Cockerel Press relating reviews of Sir Gawain, sketchbook 260 x 205 mm, wood engravings 315 x 200 mm and smaller ccording to Christopher Sandford The Studio called Dorothea Braby's work 'skilful' and 'excellent examples of the art of the colour engraver', whilst the Times Literary Supplement was uncharacteristically generous, praising Braby's 'skilful and beautiful designs', and saying 'every page is a thing of beauty'.
