Boyer Gonzales, Jr. showed his work in over 100 major group and solo exhibitions during his lifetime.

When growing up he took instruction from his father. After graduating college he studied with Henry Lee McFee and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In 1937, he accepted a teaching position at the newly formed Witte Museum School of Art. After two years he accepted a teaching position at the University of Texas. In 1941, he left the University of Texas to teach at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles.

After World War II, Gonzales was appointed as assistant professor at the University of Texas. In 1947 and 1948, he served as the chairman of the art department at the University of Texas. In 1954, Gonzales accepted a position as chairman of the art department at the University of Washington, a position he held until 1966.

These four paintings are from are a series of six painted from the site of an archeology dig.
