Tawse (Sybil, fl.1900-1940). Books and toys in a nursery corner, watercolour, showing a bookcase in a corner of a nursery with a shelf crowded with toys (incl. a Russian doll, a kaleidoscope, a wooden whale, a marionette, etc.), with a shelf of books below, signed, 355 x 263 mm (14 x 10.5 ins), mounted, framed and glazed Sybil Tawse studied at Lambeth School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, where she won the King's Prize Scholarship and various medals. She painted portraits, illustrated books in line and colour, and designed posters. She owes much to Hugh Thomson and the Brocks. Her watercolours are particularly fine. (1)
