Item Overview

Description

This exceptional originally hand-colored engraving is from Charles Lucien Bonaparte’s American Ornithology; or, the Natural History of Birds inhabiting the United States not given by Wilson. The work was published in Philadelphia by S. A. Mitchell; Carey & Lea between 1825 and 1833. This is the continuation of Wilson's American Ornithology.

The female Great Crow-Blackbird on plate 4 is the first published bird plate after a drawing by John James Audubon, who is described in the text as "that zealous observer of nature and skilful artist." The remaining plates were after drawings by Titian Ramsay Peale and Alexander Rider.
