Adrien-Jean Maximilien Vachette was born on 9th January 1753 in Cauffry (Oise). After an eight-year long apprenticeship, he was registered on 21st July 1779, thanks to the endorsement of Pierre-François Drais ; he set up a shop in Paris on the Place Dauphine, close to the Pont Neuf. Although he obtained an great success during the reign of King Louis XVI, he managed to go through the Revolutionary upheavals without encountering major problems; his business flourished again under the First Empire, the Restauration and the July Monarchy. He died in Paris on 23th September 1839.

The Louvre owns 31 boxes signed by Vachette of which 16 date back to the "Ancien Régime" period (1) while 15 date back to the post-revolutionary era (2). An unrivaled master in his own art, Vachette managed to adapt his creations to the tastes of an eclectic clientele: during the pre-1789 period he realized a number of boxes and snuff-boxes decorated with translucent enamels, medallions depicting portraits, lacquer, mosaics, pietra-dura set with gold, or miniatures after the antique painted in grey tones, as those on our exemplary.

These miniatures, painted on the basis of archaic cameos, under a crystal plaque as on our exemplary, on ivory or on enamel, were the specialty of Jacques-Joseph de Gault (circa 1738-1817). Between 1758 and 1760, while working as painter on porcelain for the Sevres manufactory, he developed the technique of trompe-l'oeil bas-reliefs. In perfect harmonization with the neoclassicism then dominating the French decorative arts, his paintings were exposed in 1777 at the Saint Luke Academy. The success he obtained on that occasion was so big that in 1787 he was summoned to realize the medallions and the panels decorated with mythological scenes imitating cameo of the serre-bijoux that the cabinetmaker Jean-Ferdinand Schwerdfeger was executing for the Queen Marie Antoinette (3).
De Gault worked on a number of miniatures destined to decorate boxes and snuff-boxes realized by some of the major Parisian goldsmiths of the period such as Pierre-François Drais, Jean Ducrollay, Charles Ouizille and Adrien-Jean-Maximilien Vachette. The Louvre owns many pieces whose "en grisaille" decorations are either signed or attributed to De Gault (4). In particular our exemplary should be compared, both for the "grisaille" decoration signed by the painter as well as for the shape, with one of the boxes conserved at the Louvre (5). Also, some scenes representing bacchanalians or inspired by comparable ancient examples signed by De Gault can be found on a box which is part of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (6), realized by Adrien-Jean Maximilien Vachette, or mounted during the 19th century on another one which is conserved at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (7). Several boxes realized either by Vachette or by other goldsmiths are decorated with De Gault's miniatures (8) along with some panels which have appeared on the auction market in the past few years (9). Finally, the Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor owns four boxes realized by Vachette (10).
