Notes

Through his treatment of the sublime, Violette creates a new sacred realm, motivated not by monumentality but by the "Profane" realities of that arena. By focusing on the background elements - stages and screens, scaffolding and lighting- that facilitate an event but are largely invisible to the viewer, Violette recovers the "tricks" of stagecraft used to bracket the event of performance, in order to examine how such tricks condition a response. Violette's transubstanciation suggests that this staged moment of perfection / disappointment will perpetually recur; in a way, each of his works is, as he titled one piece, an "untitled model for a future disaster," which is more often than not unspecified and impossible to predict, but always inevitable, tracing the possibility of communion rather than its actual manifestation. (S. Momin, ‘A Glancing Mirror:The ObscureTotal Idea', BanksViolette, NewYork, 2005, p. 18).
