Item Overview

Description

Scale model by William "Bill" Tarr (1925-2006, New York, Sarasota) of one door of the massive "Gates of of the Six Million" (a.k.a. "Gates of Hell") at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. The Whitney Museum in New York was the first to exhibit Mr. Tarr's work in 1962 where the Ford Foundation purchased the exhibited piece for the Art Institute of Chicago. The Whitney bought another of his sculptures - which the NYTimes art critic called the centerpiece of the show - for its own permanent collection. Tarr was primarily known for his public works, including the Martin Luther King Memorial in NYC. Provenance: Estate of the artist.
