Item Overview

Description

Bigelow, Mary Porter New Hampshire (1886-1969) SUMMER TREES oil on board, framed signed: lower right, Mary Porter H20" W23" *Artist biography: A painter of the New England landscape, which she loved and depicted with quiet, pastoral qualities, Mary Bigelow did many scenes of the White Mountains of New Hampshire as well as other locations. She was a student of Charles Curtis Allen, who was her neighbor, and also for brief periods with Aldro Hibbard, Marion Sloane, and Anthony Thieme. Her husband encouraged her art talent, but she put her domestic commitments ahead of her art. In later years, when she returned to painting, her husband accompanied her on many sketching trips. She did small oil sketches, which she converted to larger paintings when she returned to her studio. She did not exhibit widely and often gave away her paintings rather than selling them.
