Description

Bevan, Irwin John David, (British) 1852-1940, three miniature watercolours depicting maritime battles, each watercolour with a handwritten excerpt to verso from James's Naval History explaining each event depicted. Two of the miniatures depicting "HMS Britannia" engaging the "Le Soleil Royal", May 19th 1692, and the third depicting The Duke of York in the "Royal Charles" engaging Admiral Opdam in the "Endraebt" both works framed and glazed, approx 13.5 x 9 cms. The fight continued for some hours with great obstinacy, and his Royal Highness was in the utmost danger. Several persons of distinction were killed on board his ship, particularly the Earl of Falmouth the KIngs favourite, Lord Muskerry, M.Boyle, son to the Earl of Corke with one ball, so near the Duke that he was covered with their blood and brains about one, the Dutch Admiral blew up with a prodigious noise
