Item Overview

Description

BERND STEINER (1884-1933) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN. Circa 1930.
39x27 3/4 inches.
Condition B+: repaired tears and restored minor losses in margins and image.
Filling up almost the entire image, the mighty Bremen is shown at dockside with passengers and freight being loaded on board. In order to emphasize her size, 938 feet long and 102 feet high, Steiner depicts a car being hoisted onto the ship to put it into perspective. While the Europa was officially the Bremen's sister ship, the Columbus was a much smaller ship that had been refitted with shorter funnels, giving it a similar appearance to the other two ships. Steiner was the in-house graphic designer for the shipping company and designed many posters for Norddeutscher Lloyd.
