Notes

Bernardino Lanzani is recorded for the first time in 1490, when Ludovico il Moro summoned this 'bono pictore de historiade' to decorate the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. In 1498 he is recorded as working in Lodi and between 1503-6 in Pavia where he receives an important commission for the Church of Sant' Agostino, and where he often worked in subsequent years. He is last recorded in 1526 in Bobbio, where he undertook the decoration of the Abbey of San Colombano.

We are grateful to Professor Mauro Natale for suggesting the attribution to Bernardino Lanzani on the basis of a color transparency (written communication, 2 December 2004).
