BERNARD LENS 1682-1740 PORTRAIT OF KING CHARLES I OF ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND (1600-1649) wearing armour and the Order of the Garter signed with monogram l.r: BL watercolour and bodycolour on ivory, held in an associated elaborate frame, the hinged reverse with red wax seals illustrating the crest and coat of arms of the Lloyd of Aston and Foxhall family 7 by 5 cm.; 2 ¾ by 2 in.

Notes

This striking portrait is based upon Sir Anthony van Dyck's portraits of the King from circa 1637-8 (Hermitage, St Petersburg and Private Collection, UK). The present lot includes the original will of Mrs Elizabeth Lloyd (d. 1774), who wrote fondly of this miniature and bequeathed it to her son.
