Description

A pair of portraits of General Thomas Popham Luscombe (b.1780) and his wife, Catherine (c.1796-1890): the former, wearing breeches, dark blue coat with black facings and standing collar, gold buttons, lace and epaulettes, white chemise and stock, his black bicorn under his left arm, his left hand resting on the hilt of his sword, his right hand tucked into the red braid at his waist, the medal of the Hanoverian Service secured to his left facing; the latter, wearing white décolleté dress with lace trim, a brooch at her corsage, wide sash ribbon, a jewel-set pendant suspended from her neck, a matching bracelet on her right wrist, her brown hair upswept and dressed with a gold and enamel tiara, her begloved left hand holding her other glove, an embroidered stole on a chaise-longue behind her.

Thomas Popham Luscombe served in Hanover between 1813-1816. He was born in Killester, Dublin and married Catherine Tooke Robinson on the 8th September 1821 at St George's Church, Hanover Square, London. They had two sons, Thomas Charles Popham Luscombe and Randolph Richards Luscombe and a daughter, Isabella Eliza Luscombe. They lived at Killester House.
