Evening atmosphere allover a plane. (View from the Forest of Odes over the Rhine valley near Darmstadt?). Signed and dated on the lower left of the centre: A. Becker D. 1840. Oil on canvas. 67 x 96cm. Young August Becker took up his studies in Darmstadt in 1837. He was very soon friends with Düsseldorfer artists such as Schirmer, Andreas Achenbach or Lessing and thus developped his own way of representing landscapes, a way that very much recalls the local school. But it was only in 1852 that he moved to the Rhineland, his base for numerous travels through Northern and Southern Europe.
