* Beaumont (Leonard, 1891-1986). Roadmenders, The Sower, Two Sunbathers, Resting Sailor, Two Sailors, Swiss Chalet & Figure in Bowler Hat, five signed coloured woodcuts and two signed uncoloured woodcuts on japan (except Swiss Chalet on wove), each signed in pencil, various sizes, 217 x 152 mm (8.6 x 6 ins) and smaller, each tipped-in to album along top margin, together with an original gouache on paper abstract design for The Communist, an unsigned colour woodcut pattern of horses, three uncoloured woodcuts, both unsigned, including one wartime design for an anti-war Christmas card, with central vertical fold, plus one unsigned colour woodcut of a landscape printed on folded paper in the form of a card, with the artist's monogram to verso of blank leaf, the latter all loosely contained in orig. album with patterned boards, rubbed and some light discolouration, small folio (29 x 19.5cm, 11.5 x 7.6ins). A gift from the artist, inscribed to verso of front free endpaper 'For Joyce R. Himsworth from the Master of the City of Sheffield Artcrafts Guild with thanks for splendid services. Leonard Beaumont, Jany. 25th 1936.' Leonard Beaumont was born in Sheffield, and attended evening classes at Sheffield School of Art, later taking up a role as art master at the City of Sheffield Artcrafts Guild. He was design consultant to Sainsburys from 1950 to 1964, and designed their distinctive logo still in use today. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield, in 1983. A new exhibition of his work will open at the Graves Gallery, Sheffield on 22nd December 2012. . (1)
