Oil on canvas. In the foreground officer with horsemen at a sutler's behind them the rest of the mounted brigade in front of a village in the far background a town. On the reverse old handwritten note (tr.) "Property of His Royal Highness Prince Leopold/bought from H. Jochums in 1872/ Hess group of horsemen from the Thirty Years' War." glued to the stretcher. Dimensions of painting 75 x 59 cm dimensions of frame 88 x 73 cm.
Carl Adolph Heinrich Hess a painter of horses and battle scenes studied at the Dresden Academy under Ephr. Gottl. Krüger and Carl Chr. Klaß and initially devoted himself to historical painting. From 1790 onwards his main interest was the depiction of horses which brought him fame and awards (such as the Prussian Golden Merit Medal). In 1800 he became honorary member of the Berlin Academy. During his sojourns in Vienna (as a member of the Academy) Hungary Russia Turkey England and Rome he studied different breeds of horses and worked on numerous battle scenes. He spent the last years of his life in Schönbrunn. Many of his paintings and graphics are displayed in public collections among others in Dresden and Frankfurt.
