Item Overview

Description

BASSI, Martino (c. 1542-1591). Dispareri in materia d'architettura, et perspettiva . Brescia: [Vincenzo da Sabio for] Francisco and Pietro Maria Marchetti, 1572. 4° (214 x 154mm). Text in Italian and Latin. Title with woodcut headpiece and printers' device [cf. Vaccaro fig. 26]. 12 engraved plates. Woodcut initials and printers' device on G3v. Retaining final blank G4. (A few small marks, some leaves lightly browned, light dampstaining.) 17th-century colour-printed paper over semi-flexible covers, manuscript paper lettering-piece on spine (extremities lightly chipped, cracks on spine). Provenance : early shelfmark on upper pastedown. FIRST EDITION. Bassi's polemical work is composed of correspondence between himself and various eminent figures -- including Palladio, Vasari, and Vignola -- criticising the work on the Duomo in Milan being performed by Pellegrino Pellegrini (called Tibaldi). The twelve plates depict the Duomo, with an emphasis on the work being performed by Pellegrini, who was architect to the cathedral from July 1567 until he was replaced by Bassi in 1586 (a replacement presumably due, in part, to the present work). A second edition, edited by F.B. Ferrari was published in Milan in 1771. Adams B-371; Berlin Kat. 2600; BM Italian 1455-1600 , p. 76 (giving da Sabio as the printer); Cicognara 423; Fowler 40; Harvard Italian 46; RIBA 219.
