Provenance - With Spinks, London. (Described as a view in North India).

The painting is accompanied by a letter from John Crabbe which identifies the subject as Algerian. Madame Bodichon had a house in Algiers.

Madame Bodichon (nee Leigh Smith) was a founder of Girton College, Cambridge, pupil of William Henry Hunt and friend of H. B. Brabazon whom she accompanied on sketching tours. She was also in the circle of members of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood.
