Item Overview

Description

Baden-Powell (Lord Robert, 1857-1941). Orig. pen and ink and watercolour drawing, signed 'Robert Baden-Powell', n.d., c. 1920s, depicting an idyll of worldly harmony, with a hand-holding chain of boy scout and girl guide leaders and children, plus a mallard, monkey, rabbit, kangaroo and African native, the scout and guide leader sitting on a log in the foreground jointly holding a small cherub-like child and looking over their shoulders through a three-leafed clover to a scene of woodland, rocky coast and sea with blue and white sky and a rainbow, a few stars and birds decorating the top, a little dust soiled, pin holes to extrems., and a few short closed marginal tears, pubs. pencil marks to verso, 254 x 320 mm An accomplished drawing which was probably used for one of the scouting publications. This item and the accompanying lot of photographs come from the Estate of Mrs Rebecca "Beccy" Manser, Guide Commissioner for Bournemouth, which was considered a show division to which visitors from abroad we directed if they wished to see the best of British Guiding. Mrs Manser became a friend of the Baden-Powells and especially of Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, who, like Mrs Manser had lived in Parkstone, Dorset. Mrs Manser died in 1969. (1)
