Notes

Since the 1970s, those artists who became known under the name "Artists from Gugging", count worldwide to the chief representatives of the Art Brut. Their origin lies in the 1950s, when the phychiatrist Leo Navratil encouraged his patients to do artistic work and discovered amongst them quite a few talents. In 1965 he published the book "Schizophrenie und Kunst", which several Vienna artists brought to Gugging. Inspired by this exchange the works, which are linked to the artistic style of the Art Brut, were since 1970 presented in national as well as international exhibitions. By now the best known artists from Gugging are internationally traded. At the same time the "House of the Artists" in Gugging continues. The art of the outsider praised by Dubuffet continues and is still developing. The artists presented here belong to the most prominent representatives of the Artists from Gugging.
