Item Overview

Description

Lin Yutang: Writer (1895-1976) whose compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West. Three letters, two TLSs from 1937 and 1938, and one ALS from 1938, all one page. In one letter, Yutang agrees to contribute a piece to "the living philosophies of the contemporary world." In the ALS, Yutang writes in part: "It occurred to me this morning reading a newspaper that we must stop building bigger telescopes if we are continue to believe in the old-fashioned God," and asking for an inclusion of a line to a submitted work, "'The greatest enemy to old religions and all anthropocentric faiths is the two hundred-inch diameter telescope.'" In very good condition, with notations, soiling and toning to all three, and paper loss to bottom of one letter.
