Item Overview

Description

AURELI, Aurelio (1652-1708) and Bernardo SABADINI (d.1718, composer). Il favore de gli dei. Parma: Ducal Press, 1690. 4o (216 x 168 mm). 14 (of 15) folding plates by Antonio Lorenzini, Ludovico Mattioli and other etchers after Domenico Mauro and Ferdinando Galli da Bibbiena (lacking the large folding plate by Carlo Virginio Draghi, six plates with repaired tears crossing images). (Short repaired tear on title.) Contemporary Italian paper boards (recased). Provenance: Parmenia Migel Ekstrom (1908-1989), ballet historian, author of The Ballerinas: from the Court of Louis XIV to Pavlova, 1972 (note in AV's hand); acquired from Ximenes, 1991. FIRST EDITION of this extensively illustrated libretto for Aureli's opera and ballet commissioned by Ranuccio II Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza, and performed at Parma to celebrate the wedding of his son Prince Odoardo II Farnese of Parma (1666-93) and Dorothea Sophie of Neuburg (1670-1748), daughter of the Elector of the Palatinate. Bibbiena and the Mauro brothers invented the ingenious machines for staging these productions, mounting the second piece on the large body of water recently constructed in the palace grounds. Federico Crivelli was responsible for the choreography. This copy includes the scarce leaf at end providing an additional scene. Allacci 329; Berlin Kat. 4137; Watanabe 1122; Wotquenne pp. 65.
