Item Overview

Description

AUGUSTO CHARTRAND (DUBOIS) (Cuban 1828-1899) "NAARDAM (HOLLAND), 1875". Outstanding and rare work from one of the three acclaimed Chartrand brothers. This oil on canvas scene is of a canal with boats and people. The canal having houses beside and ships moored in the distance. Each vessel has a number of figures on deck and there is a woman greeting two men on one ship. The right side shows a workhorse with driver towing a boat with a house beyond. A fine detailed rendering. Signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Augusto was known to travel throughout the world and this no doubt was a result of one of his European visits. Housed in a modern gilt wood frame. Accompanying this lot is the original gesso decorated frame which has some losses. PROVENANCE: From a fine Downeast Maine home. Prior to this, owned by the owner's of a Cuban sugar plantation in the 1800's. Believed to have been purchased from the artist. REFERENCE: This work is sited in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture database (Control Number: IAP 17960008). SIZE: 8-1/4" x 12". CONDITION: Very good. 9-74834 HP
