PROVENANCE

Simon Dickinson, New York.

EXHIBITED

New York, Simon Dickinson, Inc. & Newhouse Galleries, Inc., Rome and the Campagna: oil sketches by August Jean-Baptiste Vinchon and other French artists, May 1999, no. 7.

NOTE

Vinchon, a pupil of Serangeli and David, entered the Prix de Rome in 1813 and won second prize with The Death of Jacob. The following year he won the Grand Prix with Diagoras Carried in Triumph by his Sons earning him a stay at the Villa Medici in Rome.

During his sojourn in Rome Vinchon, like his fellow students, studied the Old Master paintings and antiquities that surrounded him. He also continued the tradition of making plein aire oil sketches of Rome and the Campagna. The rolling hills outside of Rome gave the artist ample subject matter that he could refer to in later years.

Upon his return to Paris, he concentrated on fresco painting. Along with Abel de Pujol and Alexandre Guillemot, he decorated the chapels at Saint-Suplice. In addition, he received commissions for the Historical Gallery at Versailles and the Court of Commercial Justice at the Stock Exchange.
