CATALOGUE NOTE

An engraving of this work was made by W. Steelink for J. van Lennep, W. Moll & J. ter Gouw, Nederlands Geschiedenis en Volksleven in schetsen, Leiden, no. 94

This scene depicts the military engineer Menno, Baron Van Coehoorn defending his own creation, the fortress of Namen. This fortress was taken in 1692 by his rival the great French engineer Marshal Vauban, who served under Louis XIV. The Dutch engineer had his revenge three years later, when the place, on which in the meantime Vauban had lavished his skill, fell to his attack. Van Coehoorn was now appointed lieutenant-general and inspector-general of the Dutch fortresses.
